8 Simple Tips to Prevent UTIs
The American Journal of Medicine reports that every one in three women in the country experiences Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) at least once before the age of 24. Also, the risk of infection is higher in women and diabetic patients because of the shorter urethra that enables microbes to easily invade the body. A UTI is typically not a life-threatening disease but can become severe and complicated.
In the initial stages of an uncomplicated infection, treating UTI does not require much effort. But prevention of a urinary tract infection is also possible. Although there are numerous pathogens that cause a UTI, bacteria are the most common culprit. Hence, the goal is to keep harmful bacteria away, and there are numerous ways to do it.
1. Water
Drink plenty of water and flush out infection-causing bacteria by drinking a lot of water and peeing often. Being well-hydrated also prevents germs from multiplying in the body. Limit the intake of alcohol and caffeinated drinks that can irritate a sensitive bladder.
2. Pee often
Do not hold back urine. Get up and use the bathroom when you feel the need to pee. Accumulating urine that needs to be emptied can result in a UTI. It is especially significant for pregnant women to do this because they are at an increased risk of contracting UTIs.
3. Wear comfortable, loose clothes
Wear loose-fitting clothes, preferably in natural fabrics like linen or cotton. Underwear is a garment worn closest to the skin, which is why wearing breathable fabrics that do not hold moisture is the best option. It is essential because moist places in the body are the perfect breeding ground for pathogens.
4. Clean before and after sex
Sexual activity increases women’s chances of getting a UTI because it is relatively easy for harmful pathogens to move into the urethra during sex. Use the bathroom before and after sexual intercourse. Wash the genitals with mild soap and water, as it is essential to keep them clean. And ensure you pat dry the area to keep UTIs away.
5. Wipe correctly
Learn to wipe your genitals from front to back. This way, the chances of E.Coli bacteria (that is responsible for the most number of urinary tract infections) entering the urethra is reduced. Also, to avoid contamination of the urinary tract by other harmful germs from the anus, wipe in the right direction.
6. Avoid chemicals
Avoid the use of feminine products that contain a lot of hazardous chemicals. It includes deodorant sprays, perfumed talcum powders, scented pads, and other hygiene products. The genitals contain a horde of useful microbes. Artificial chemicals can contaminate this area and cause a disruption in the natural balance.
7. A shower is better than a bath
Doctors recommend a shower instead of a bath. The chemicals in soap, shampoo, and scented products used in bubble baths can irritate the sensitive urinary tract. While it is not necessary to avoid a relaxing warm bath altogether, it is best to stick to a warm shower as much as possible, especially if you have urinary discomfort or irritation.
8. Be flexible about birth control methods
Spermicides, certain kinds of condoms, and diaphragms can be a potent source of bacterial infections. So be flexible about changing birth control methods to prevent UTI.
Urinary tract infections can be painful and bothersome. Sometimes, they can be a recurring condition, too. Try to incorporate as many preventive methods as possible.
